On the 3rd day of our Dharamshala tour we went to visit famous Masroor Rock Cut Temple and Kangra Fort. After breakfast, first we went to visit ‘Masroor Rock Cut’ temple. We booked a car. Masroor is 45 km from Dharamshala and famous for remarkable group of rock cut temples. They form a group of 15 monolithic rock cut temples in the Indo-Aryan style. These cave temples are the only rock shrines in the Northern part of India. The main shrine contains three stone images of Ram, Laxman and Sita. According to experts the temple complex was built in 8th century AD. It is claimed that all 15 temples are carved out of a single rock. The temple complex has a sacred pool in front on the east side.
The architecture is very similar to the cut temples in Mahabalipuram and Ellora. The temple is largely destroyed during the devastating during Kangra Earthquake of 1905.
According to local myths, the Pandavas spent a long period of time here in this temple premises during their exile.
